AFTERCARE
How do I take care of my tattoo?
REGULAR HEALING
Leave the wrap on for 1-2 hours — or take it off whenever you get home.
Take a shower and/or wash the ointment off the tattoo with unscented liquid soap and use paper towel to pat dry. Do not re-wrap the tattoo. If you decide to go out again the same day, wash again before bed.
From the next day onwards, wash twice a day (morning and night) with unscented soap. Always use paper towel to pat dry.
On day 3+, the tattoo will start to get dry and itchy. Start using a small amount of unscented, water-based lotion (Cetaphil, Eucerin, Aveeno, etc) after washing and patting dry. No petroleum jelly.
2nd and 3rd week of healing will see the tattoo peeling — DO NOT SCRATCH OR PICK AT THE SCABS. Continue to wash and moisturize your tattoo.
By the 4 week mark, your tattoo should be fully healed.
SECOND SKIN
The first application will be done by me immediately after the tattoo.
After around 24 hours, take a shower. Remove the first application as the last step of your shower. To remove, loosen up one corner and pull in the same direction – stretching it, rather than pulling it the opposite direction. Once the bandage is off, wash the tattoo with unscented soap.
Dry off after your shower but avoid touching the tattoo with your towel. Use paper towel to gently pat dry the tattoo and surrounding area. If the general area isn’t dry, the bandage won’t adhere to your skin properly.
Reapply the new bandage ensuring that you smooth it out before pulling back the tab (to avoid air bubbles). Leave it on for 3-5 days. Do not submerge the area in water. Do not get sweat trapped underneath. Take it easy for the next few days while the bandage is on. Showering is fine. Just check to make sure no water has gotten inside the bandage after your showers. If it has, remove the bandage.
After 3-5 days (or whenever you remove the second application), remove it the same way in the shower. Wash the tattoo with unscented soap, pat dry, and start using a thin layer of unscented lotion.
Repeat washing and moisturizing 1-2 times a day until it’s fully healed and settled.
IMPORTANT: If you start to develop a red border around the bandage, you may be having an allergic reaction to the adhesive or polyurethane. Remove the bandage and wash the tattoo. Follow the steps in “regular healing” above.
TIPS FOR HEALING
Do not submerge in water — no swimming, baths, etc. Showers are okay.
Do not scratch your tattoo — it will heal shiny and potentially patchy.
Wear loose clothing around the tattoo.
Avoid sun exposure — no sunscreen until it’s fully healed.
If the tattoo gets dirty (sweat, animals/humans touching), wash it.
Just keep it clean, dry, but lightly moisturized as needed.
